Marta was making pastel paper the last time I visited and I grabbed
one. She had based them all in different colors, so cool. Last night
at 11 I started this French waiter, what was I thinking? I am not
overly thrilled with my results. In my photo he is doing this weird
persing of his lips plus the shadows are so dark no eye details show
up which I tried to fix... Hmmm. The paper was not quite 8x10 so it
was small to do a bust. Yet I am happy since I think I got his
porportions right, captured him and I love the background.

Ooo ,La La! I like your French waiter, Desiree. He has a lot of character in his face, and I love the background and your overall rendering of the piece.
desiree.. everytime i think i've seen all of your wonderful talent you pop up with something else!! i think thisis really good.. great color, great mood... love how you start these so late.. when do you sleep?? or dont you??LOL
Thanks Beena and Cindi for your comments, its hard to post the paintings that don't turn out perfectly, to me anyway. But its all a learning experience. Cindi, I don't sleep well, and once I start a project I get all excited and into it! I am trying to do some looser pastels, more painterly since they remind me of oils. I love pastels. I did this without a prelim sketch so you can see why I am happy with the porportions! I just colored in my negative space around him and then started. He was so cute at the cafe where I photographed him, this is all I came back with that day after spending 12 dollars on a expresso!
So what did you think of the texture of the paper? I haven't decided yet if I like it or not! Can't wait to see this in person, nicely done.
Desiree i like the skin tone and his expression. Yyou know he has on the clothes of those Apache dancers, were they all dressed this way.
Lots of character and like you, I love the background
You should be very happy with this!!! Lovely job! I'll keep my eyes out for him when I'm in France soon. I'm heading there for 4 weeks...Paris, here I come.
Ula la, Joan I am so envious, have a wonderful time, we did. He was in the art district of Montmartre/Basilique du Sacre-Coeur in one of the outside coffee stops that are sooo expensive but lent themselves to some great subject matter for paintings!
This come out very nice. Great pose and I love his eye expression.
